Children's Literature

Syllabus

This course is a celebration of books! Come prepared to read, explore, and have fun learning!

Course Goals:

1. to read a wide selection of children's literature by Maine authors and illustrators
2. to visit locations that resonate in Maine children's literature
3. to meet authors and illustrators
4. to develop a collection of unit ideas for use in your own classroom

Field Trips:

We will travel to a variety of sites, including, but not limited to, museums, bookstores, libraries, harbors and towns where authors resided, a cemetery, a tour of a windjammer, and lunch in Acadia National Park. Each place we visit will tie into what we are reading and into our exploration of books that impart a real flavor of Maine.

Suggested Text:

A Celebration of Maine Children's Books by Lynn Plourde and Paul Knowles (Although this is not required, this is a superb text that features 185 books by Maine authors and illustrators.)
