National geographic student expeditions, June 27-July 6, 2010

Students completing 9th through 12th grades work in teams to craft their "On Assignment" project through dynamic workshops and excursions with National Geographic experts and trip leaders. You might write an article on a local personality, create a documentary film, or delve deeper into the marine ecology of one of the most pristine stretches of the Atlantic seaboard. A typical day begins with a workshop or exercise focused on your "On Assignment" project — a talk with a local expert about changing whale populations, for instance, or a lesson in film editing. Then head out on field assignments or choose from an array of active excursions — hiking, kayaking, biking, or exploring nearby islands. We'll return to campus in the late afternoon so that you can take advantage of some free time to play a pick-up game of basketball or write in your journal. In the evening, attend an enrichment workshop on topics such as whale behavior or the region's maritime history, or organize an "open-mic" night with your friends. On the final day of the program, you'll share your On Assignment project with the group.

Works on Paper: Influencing Fluency through Technique

This course is designed for artists and art educators who are interested in infusing and informing their individual practice with a variety of expressive mediums that expand their existing repertoire of techniques. Demonstrations will include Pen and Ink, Monotype Printing, Photo Transfer Process, Watercolor, and Assemblage/Collage. Participants may choose one or more new techniques to incorporate into their professional work while they expand and strengthen their resources as teachers.

Each day will begin with a morning session that introduces new materials, methods, demonstrations and historical aspects of the medium. Consideration of works by contemporary artists challenge participants to develop their personal artist vision in ways that demonstrate a deeper understanding of the relationship between art and meaning. Afternoon sessions will provide an opportunity for participants to select from and apply processes within their own professional work. Exploration of new practices will provide the means to further explore ideas and develop a unique body of work. In this session diversity of practice and innovation is encouraged. Student’s experimentation and interpretation during the afternoon sessions should connect to a new understanding of the art making processes. Students may choose to work from still life, portraiture or landscape as subject matter or continue their work with previously established content.

Evening sessions will be group critiques and prompted discussions where students show work from the day and discuss concepts, discoveries, challenges and contexts within the contemporary art world. Participants will produce a final portfolio that demonstrates an investigation into a more personal artist sensibility. These ideas and images of work will be presented for a final critique/seminar at AIB to be determined. Graduate students will be required to produce a greater quantity of work.

proprioceptive writing workshop, Thinking deeply through writing: august 1-7, 2010

Thinking deeply through writing is one of life's great pleasures. Though your inner thoughts "speak" to you and are revealed in inner images, you may not hear them, see them, or recognize their true meaning to you. Through the enlivening practice of PW, learn to express your inner thoughts fully & think deeply about them. Like meditation, this activity calms, energizes, and produces understandings that liberate as they take hold. A creative way to come face-to-face with your ultimate desires and personal history. A powerful catalyst for change.

PW sessions with Linda Trichter Metcalf twice daily. Bonus evening sessions writing & reading poetry with Tobin Simon. No prior writing experience required. Newcomers welcome.

islands through time and rivers through time, august 1-7, 2010

Islands Through Time and Rivers Through Time are College of the Atlantic's summer programs for rising high school juniors and seniors who want to learn in multiple settings, explore the connections between science, art and the humanities and engage in an intensive program of reading and study combined with active, applied learning opportunities.

College of the Atlantic focuses on the relationships between humans and their environments in an integrative manner (Human Ecology). These programs will explore environmental, aesthetic, cultural, political, historical, and economic aspects of a region of focus, either coastal Maine islands or the remote wilderness rivers of Maine. Both programs have a component that takes place on the COA campus and Mount Desert Island, which includes Acadia National Park. In addition, students will spend time on multi-day trips to the college’s island research stations or on the Allagash Wilderness Waterway in northern Maine.

Either of these programs will provide you with opportunities to reflect on your place in the world and to develop skills you will use in college and beyond. We are looking for a select group of students willing to take advantage of a unique educational opportunity at a pivotal moment in their lives. Are you ready for the challenge?
