Exceptionalities: Supporting Students with Disabilities in the Regular Classroom

Course Objectives

   By the end of the course students will be able to:

•    Identify and describe current laws, regulations issues and trends in education affecting individuals with disabilities and their families; develop a working definition for each area of exceptionality in relation to achievement of educational goals. 
•    Describe the processes of the individualized educational planning team and student study team, including the processes of referral, assessment and placement of students with disabilities.
•    Develop strategies and resources for modifying, adapting and/or differentiating curriculum and instruction. Adapt instruction and modify the classroom-learning environment to address the special needs of exceptional students (including behavior management techniques).
•    Recognize children's academic strengths and weaknesses, perceptual characteristics, and preferred learning modalities (i.e.: auditory, visual, kinesthetic).
•    Evaluate the concept of least restrictive environment and its implications for the instructional process.
•    Utilize ethical practices used in communicating to others about individual pupils.
•    Identify major local, state, and national resources available to teachers of exceptional students.
