Human Ecology Core Course

Discussion in class

All entering students take the Human Ecology Core Course (HECC) during their first fall on campus. The HECC is a small, discussion-intensive seminar that provides an introduction to human ecology for a group of 12 to 15 students. Faculty members teaching the HECC take an interdisciplinary approach to one topic, drawing upon the work of novelists, philosophers, political theorists, economists, artists, and others. The course models a human ecological approach to a complex social phenomenon, and gives students experience in defining and addressing a complex subject. An additional goal of this course is to introduce students to critical reading, writing and discussion skills that are an essential ingredient for success at COA.
