Today @ COA

I was looking for a holistic environmental approach. COA was the best out there - and I exhausted myself with research.

Great Lakes of Africa Scholarship

Through the generosity of Chairman of the Board of Trustees Samuel Hamil Jr., College of the Atlantic is pleased to offer the Great Lakes of Africa Scholarship.  This scholarship provides an exemplary and promising student from the Great Lakes Region of Africa with the full financial assistance needed to attend COA.  Any citizen of Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania or Uganda who is also enrolled in secondary school in one of these countries is eligible for the scholarship.  Tuition, room, board, books and health insurance are all covered by the Great Lakes of Africa Scholarship.  In addition, there is funding for the student to return home each summer.

Candidates who wish to apply should submit the following information and materials to COA:

  • Preliminary Application Form
  • Copy of complete transcript from secondary school

The deadline for submission of the preliminary application form and transcript wasOctober 31, 2007.  THE APPLICATION DEADLINE HAS PASSED AND APPLICATIONS ARE NO LONGER BEING ACCEPTED.  Five students will be selected as semi-finalists from among the preliminary applicants.  These five students will be notified by November 20, 2007 of their selection and asked to register for the January administration of the TOEFL.  COA will make arrangements to cover the costs of TOEFL registration.  The five semi-finalists will also be required to complete COA's application for undergraduate admission by February 1, 2008.  The Admission Committee will review applications and announce the one recipient of the Great Lakes of Africa Scholarship by February 15, 2008.  Selection in both rounds of consideration is based upon:

  • High level of academic performance
  • Demonstrated proficiency in English
  • Demonstrated understanding of COA's curricular and extra-curricular offerings
  • Capacity for contribution to the COA community
  • Independence and a flexible attitude towards civic engagement, cultural change and diversity

Questions regarding the Great Lakes of Africa Scholarship and application process should be directed to Sarah Baker, Dean of Admission.
