Darron Collins is an expert in the connection between plants and people, he is the managing Director for the World Wildlife Fund conservation program in the Amur-Heilong watershed of eastern Mongolia, Northeastern China, and the Russian Far East. His training and extensive field experience in ethnobotony - the study of the relationship between plants and people - form an excellent basis for identifying the challenges and creating solutions in this important area. Darron received his BA from COA in 1992 and is MA and PhD from Tulane University. Throughout his studies he has examined how plants shape human communities and how humans shape botanical communities.
Darron has published over 20 articles in a wide range of scientific journals and popular publications. In addition to his work in the Amur-Heilong, Darron has spent years studying and working in Amazonia and lowland Guatemala. Across all these geographic regions, he has remained dedicated to developing conservation methodologies that find ways to balance human welfare with economic and cultural sustainability. He and his wife Karen have two daughters, Maggie (5) and Molly (3). Outside of ethnobotany, conservation and his family, Darron loves whitewater kayaking and fly fishing.

COA is undertaking a review and renewal of its academic and student life programs.
We want to ensure we are teaching the right things, the right way. We want to evolve the curriculum so we know we are offering what future students need. We want to make sure our educational results match our goals.
The answers to these questions will also help us guide our investments in the future in the areas of new positions, facilities and programs.
Who knows how well the COA curriculum serves students better than past COA students? We're hoping you will help us. Over the next months, we will be reaching out to alumni to get feedback on how well your education served you, what you loved, what you wish had been offered.
