The Thorndike Library's rare book collection consists of materials that are unique, valuable or fragile. These items are relevant to the college's teaching and research interests. The items in the rare book collection may be acquired through donation or purchase.
Criteria for determining placement in the rare book collection:
• Scarcity - can be a newer book that is no longer published
• Local or Historic Importance - does not have to have monetary value
• Fragile Condition
• Signed by the author or historical figure
• First, early, special or limited editions
• Vulnerability - subject to theft or mutilation
• To access a rare book please ask at the front desk. Stacks are closed to the public. Rare books must be used in the library and can not be checked out.
• The rare books are designated in Athena (the library's online catalog) under the heading SPEC COLL.
• All materials should be returned to one of the library's offices and given to the archivist. Please do not return materials to the front desk.
• Photocopying of rare books can be done only with permission of a librarian - some books are fragile and photocopying would cause more deterioration.
• The rare books collection can be accessed when approved library personnel are available. There may be times when the library is open that a student employee can not access the collection. Otherwise, the collection can be accessed during the hours the library is open.
• When possible, proper notice by the patron to access a rare book in the collection is much appreciated.
• Pencils only are permitted for note-taking. In particular, readers must not use ink or pens of any kind (fountain, ball point, felt tip, etc.) place harmful marker in books; lay books face down, or use them as a writing or resting surfaces. Unnecessary handling should be avoided.
• Food or drink should not be near the rare books while they're being viewed.
• Please treat the rare books with care. They are one-of-a-kind and we would like to keep them in shape for future patrons.
