Issues in National Park Planning - AD174

This seminar provides an overview of the National Park System (NPS).Emphasis is on the history and evolution of the NPS, approaches to public service, natural and cultural resource protection, environmental education, and recreation.  In addition we look at relations between national parks and their surrounding regions in economic, planning, and political terms.  We also attempt to clarify the Park Service's dual role as a mission driven and a practically focused agency.  Various staff members from Acadia National Park serve as resource persons to the course.  A field component is included to provide direct experience with management and implementation methods involved in providing service to Acadia's nearly three million annual visitors.

Level:  Introductory/Intermediate.  Offered every two to three years.  Class size: 15.
