Tutorial: Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages - ED099

The objective of this course is to prepare students who are interested in pursuing English teaching to (primarily literate) learners whose primary language is not English in a non-English speaking culture. Students will learn about theories of second language acquisition, the relationship between language and culture, and methods of teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL). While students will gain skills in developing learners' oral and aural English skills, the emphasis will be on teaching English reading and writing skills. In addition, students will gain confidence and skill in managing a classroom, assessing language learning, involving the community and building a resource base. Activities include autobiographical writing on learning a second language, interviewing non-native English speakers, reading responses to second language acquisition literature, fieldtrips, guest speakers, in-class activities demonstrating and practicing different strategies and methods, individual study of one aspect of the English language, creating lesson plans, and peer teaching. Evaluation will be based on class participation, quality of written responses to reading, application of theory in lesson plans and peer teaching, and demonstration of skills and knowledge needed for teaching ESL. ADVANCED. Prerequisite: Some experience observing or teaching in a classroom or as a tutor; English fluency and strong writing skills. Class limit 5.
