This class will examine the anatomy, physiology, ecology, and evolutionary history of class Mammalia.  Beginning with the evolutionary origin of the first mammals in the Triassic we will follow the adaptive radiation within the group, and the development of increasingly specialized organisms in response to changing climactic and biological conditions.  During the final portion of the course, we will examine current theories of hominid evolution and the effects of human dispersal patterns on mammalian biodiversity.  Lab work will focus on the identification of North American mammals, but we will also take advantage of other specimens, as they become available.  Evaluation based on a series of quizzes, a lab practical, and a term project focusing on one family of mammals.  Three hours of lecture/discussion per week plus one three hour lab. 

Level: Intermediate/Advanced.  Prerequisities:  Biology I & II  required, additional courses in ecology and evolution strongly encouraged.  Signature of instructor required.    Lab Fee $25.00.  Offered based on demand. *ES*
