"At COA you're not just learning information, you're questioning your fundamental ideas on what it means to be learning."

Applied Pre-Calculus - ES398

Meets the following requirements: QR

Math is not merely a set of rules applied to numbers; math is a form of human ecological inquiry, a tool that helps us understand the complex processes or relationships that shape our world. In this hands-on, inquiry-based math course, we will apply quantitative reasoning to answer real-world questions while developing skills in algebra, trigonometry, basic statistics, and differential equations. Student interests will determine the kinds of questions we address, but subjects may include navigation, environmental science, ecology, demographics, physics, sociology, engineering, or any other topic that piques our curiosity. Lecture and class discussions will provide the skills and theory, while students get practical experience in weekly labs and assignments. The final project will allow students to pursue a line of quantitative inquiry which interests them, applying their skills to practical and salient problems. Students will be evaluated based on weekly quantitative assignments, class participation, and a final project.  Students will be required to have and use: 1) a scientific calculator, 2) graph paper, 3) pencil(s) with eraser(s).

Level: Introductory     Prerequisite: high school algebra.   Class size: 16   Lab Fee: $10 for lab materials and supplies. *QR*
