Meets the following requirements: HS
This is an advanced course in the history of ideas about cultural change and attempts to explain the similarities and differences among human groups. The search for a science of culture takes us from the 18th century to the present, examining idealist, materialist, structuralist, and biological reductionist conceptions, among others. Each student is expected to select and research a topic and to present findings both in an oral report and in a major paper. Text: Marvin Harris, The Rise of Anthropological Theory.
