How are the problems of human ecology experienced, described, and dealt with in the context of a "developing" country with a tropical climate, unusual geology, a high level of biological diversity, communities of indigenous peoples, a history of conquests and revolutions, vibrant artistic traditions, and a contested set of relationships to the post-NAFTA & GATT global political economy? This interdisciplinary course provides an introduction to these issues by focusing on Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula. The course is offered as a part of the Winter Term in the Yucatan. It includes guest lectures, site visits, student projects, and a variety of fieldactivities that help students integrate their studies of Spanish language, Mexican culture, and Yucatecan ecology. The development and application of language learning and ethnographic study are stressed as integral parts of the course. Offered every other year.
