This course uses classic readings in world literature to introduce the history and mythology that lie behind our own culture.  Starting with Homer's Odyssey and selections from the Old Testament, we work into the Greeks with Plato and Sophocles, the middle ages with Beowulf and some newly "discovered" women poets, and the Renaissance with some of Shakespeare's plays sonnets.  The purpose of the class is to develop the skills of careful reading and thoughtful writing, and to get familiar with the development of Western civilization.  It also serves as a background for further course in writing and literature.  There are three papers over the term, with a tutorial conference after each assignment.  The course use one text, the new Macmillan anthology of world literature (volume 1), which allows a great deal of exploration in material not directly assigned for class.
