Meets the following requirements: HS HY
By our breath we are each vitally connected to the vast process of the oxygen cycle-- affected each time a tree is slashed and burned in the Amazon. Just as directly and just as vitally we are each now connected to trees and other organisms from Brazil to Borneo by a cycle of money and the things it buys. What are the structures of this "money cycle" and the other institutions of government and society which frame its context? By what politics can these institutions and the market systems they frame be altered? What is their history --- and future? How are the dynamics of local communities connected by this cycle to global change? This course uses some classic texts (e.g. Adam Smith, Karl Marx) and some contemporary readings (e.g. Susan Meeker-Lowry, and Gustava Esteva) to introduce core concepts and key interdisciplinary models used in dealing with such questions. This course is a prerequisite for the Advanced Seminar in Public Policy and Organizational Development.
Level: Introductory/Intermediate. Offered every year. *HS* *HY* J. Gray Cox
