Meets the following requirements: HS
What is the history of the ways U. S. History has been told and taught? This is a course in theories of history and narrative that focuses on the succession of approaches that have been dominant in the region of the U. S. since 1491. Readings will include TELLING THE TRUTH ABOUT HISTORY by Joyce Appleby, Lynn Hunt and Margaret Jacob, ALBION'S SEED by David Hackett Fischer, and a variety of short selections from classic texts. The class will use a seminar format in which students will share short critical evaluations of various theories and texts. Final projects will consist of a personal statement developing the student's own view of how U. S. history should be told and taught and a sample telling of it for a curriculum unit, public policy document, work of art or other appropriate application. This will be an intermediate level course which presupposes some familiarity with the major events, trends, and stages of U. S. History.
