Advanced Seminar in Pol. Philosophy: Kant, Habermas & Rawls - HS498

Meets the following requirements: HS   

How can basic principles of human rights, democratic governance and moral foreign policy be developed, defined and defended philosophically? This course examines the arguments of three key, widely influential philosophers and their critics.  Class sessions  will emphasize  close textual analysis and careful  construction of creative alternative solutions to the problems being addressed. A series of short papers providing careful argument analysis will be assigned. Evaluation will be based on class participation and quality of writing. Some previous work in philosophy and/or political theory required -- or consent of the instructor.
