Conquest, Resistance, & Accommodation in Yucatan:1500-1920 - HS336

Meets the following requirements: HS HY

This course will trace the history of the region from the conquest to the pacification of Quintana Roo in the early twentieth century.  By looking at the ways that Maya, Europeans, and then mestizos lived together in the region we will seek to understand the dual process of external domination and internal accommodation.  Starting with the conquest and evangelization of the Maya in the sixteenth century, the course will look at the variety of Maya responses to the innovations brought by the dzules, or foreigners.  The course will end with a detailed examination of the Caste War from 1847-1920s and its aftermath.  By using the historical sites in the central and southeastern regions of the peninsula we will ask how the regions past has been dictated by the clash and fusion of cultures which has produced the ethnically, economically and culturally diverse region that is Yucatan today.
