Language II: Mind and Meaning - HS617

Meets the following requirements: HS

What can a theory of the nature of language tell us about the human mind and behavior?  How helpful are the results of cognitive science, psycholinguistics and computer modeling in answering these questions?  By exploring some of the major theories in this area in some detail, this course examines the issue of the limit of behavioral science explanation and modeling by considering the work of Wittgenstein and others and the kind of pluralism suggested by the Human Ecology tradition.  This class will be taught in an advanced seminar style.  Evaluation will be based on seminar presentations and a final research paper.

Level: Intermediate/Advanced.  Prerequisite: Language I: Form and Function.  Class limit 15.  *HS*
