Marketing Artisanal Food: Research Seminar/Cultural Context - HS402

Meets the following requirements: HS HY

This course would seek out marketing practices of small producers which have been banned and look at the history of the new requirements, whether by agency rule or by legislative initiative - who initiated the rule or law change, who testified, who paid them, who benefitted, who lost? We will also try to find out what evidence there is of any public health implications or consequences.  Typical of the restrictions might be: selling milk from your own cow; selling fish which has been dried in the sun; picking crabmeat in your home kitchen, or making and selling pesto from your home kitchen.  What can't you sell, and why?  Field trips will take us to talk with people who have been affected by changes in the marketing laws.  Each student will be asked to identify one such practice and then research every possible aspect of it, including ways by which the rule or law could be overturned and by identifying and interviewing people who have been affected.  Evaluation will be based on participation in the group and the final report.
