The Eye and the Poet - MD015

Using a shared creative vision, students collaborate on making artifacts embodying both verbal and visual elements.  We look briefly at the history of creative interchange between writers and  visual artists, then concentrate on collaborations of our own.  Students create image/text objects to be critiqued weekly.  Particular emphasis is placed on the use of typography as visual form, but use of other visual media is also encouraged.  The three hour classes involve both a writing workshop and illustration studio, using students' own art and poetry for inspiration and illustration.  In order to take best advantage of this course, we recommend one prior creative writing course or one arts and design course.  Students are expected to prepare eight to nine visual texts for exhibition later in the  term.  Technical skills to be learned include digital typography, digital  photography, and digital illustration.  Software supported through this course:  Microsoft Word, Freehand, and Adobe Photoshop.

Level:  Intermediate/Advanced.  Prerequisites:  An introductory arts and design course or creative writing course.  Offered every third year.  Class limit: 15.  Lab fee $80 for color prints and hard drive cartridge.  *AD*
