Meets the following requirements: ES HS
This course will integrate biology and environmental policy in the context of tropical marine and terrestrial ecosystems. We will be using conservation issues in Tobago as specific case studies for this class, combined with a 3-4 week field school in Tobago. There will be substantial lecture material on the ecology and evolution of populations, coastal zone management and wetland policy, and environmental treaties. Students will learn about and critique different national and international conservation approaches. This course will have a stronger component covering the marine environment than a typical conservation biology course, but much of the discussion of marine species and environments will be in the context of comparing terrestrial and aquatic models. Evaluation will be based on short problems sets and individual or group projects. This course is to be taken concurrently with Creation and Management of Protected Areas: An International Perspective and Tropical Marine Ecology.
