GENERAL HEALTH SERVICES

MDI Hospital
Wayman Lane, Bar Harbor
Tel: 288-5081

Mental Health and Counseling Services
We have three counselors holding office hours on-campus during term time on Tuesday, and Thursday mornings.
              Lori Alley: Tues, 9:30am - 12:30pm
              Andrea Gabel-Richards: Thurs, 8:00 - 11:45am

Students are asked to go down to the Health Office in Seafox rm. 14 and sign up on the sheets posted outside the door.  It is both important and respectful to then call the counselor you wish to see at their office (their numbers are posted on the sign-up sheets) to let them know you have taken a particular time.  Students are expected to pay a $10 co-pay with each visit.

If a student feels they need counseling but cannot either make the scheduled on-campus times or afford the co-pay, they should feel free to contact Sarah Luke at x305.  Any information or request will be treated with the utmost confidence.

Campus Clinic - Seafox rm. 14
Barbara Logue is our Nurse Practitioner again this term and her hours are as follows:
Monday 8:30am - 2:00pm
Wednesday 8:30 - 2:00pm
Friday 8:30am - 2:00pm

Services are provided for students on a walk-in basis, with the exception of complete physical exams and gynecological exams which are by appointment only.  Please call Barbara at x383 during scheduled office hours to make an appointment.

Services provided:
 *Acute illness/injury management (including diagnostic
 and prescriptive services)
 *Management of Chronic illness
*Sexually Transmitted Disease screening & counseling
 *Birth control services
 *Routine Gynecological exams
 *Routine Physical examinations
 *Referrals to appropriate medical services

Examinations are free.  Any labs, x-rays, or other diagnostic services are available at cost per MDI hospital.

AS AN FYI:  students can also get testing for STDs, including HIV, for a reduced rate through our on-campus Nurse, Barbara Logue.  For $35, students can get tested for gonnorrhea, chlamydia, and HIV.  The deal is only available if you pay for it right there and then.  (The cost, otherwise, is $192.)  Please also be aware that, at present, your COA student health insurance doesn't cover proactive STD testing (but we are negotiating that for next year).

Some assistance towards the cost may be available from D.E.A.N. if they have the funds, however a request for HIV testing cannot be denied due to lack of funds. The health center also does free HIV tests and STD screening for men and women who have been sexually assaulted. It is important to note that the HIV antibody test is anonymous, which means that no personal details are recorded. Young people are often very afraid to have these tests and they will need to be reassured that anonymity is guaranteed by the health center. The members of COA's AIDS team are also available to take people to the health center, no questions asked. Call Ander Thebaud to arrange the contact. It is illegal under Maine State Law to divulge the HIV status of any person.
