"I knew I had a lot of learning to do. At COA I was able to build the classroom for the learning I needed to do."

COA International Programs

College of the Atlantic offers a number of opportunities to study abroad. The goal of the International Studies Program is to extend the our Human Ecology curriculum into international and intercultural settings. We seek to carry out interdisciplinary and collaborative teaching and learning in a variety of field settings. Students travel with faculty on field courses in Mexico, Guatemala, Canada, and the Caribbean as well as conduct internships and independent study around the globe. In a typical graduating class well over fifty percent of our graduates have participated in some sort of international program.

The main elements of our international program are:

Yucatan term
Guatemala Program
Ecology and Literature of the Sea (St. Thomas and the U.S. Virgin Islands)
Tropical Marine Ecology
Education and the State (Quebec, Canada)

In addition to the above course offerings, many students do international residencies, internships and final projects. In many cases the college provides some research funds to support these activies.  There are also a myriad of classes on-campus that are international in focus and scope.
