The various technological revolutions that have occurred throughout the development of the modern society have usually been greeted with great optimism concerning the prospects of solving most of the major problems facing humanity.  At the present time there is a growing concern that developed technology may have produced more problems than it has solved.  This course looks at the development of technology in European society and explores various theories concerning the relationship between technology and society.  After studying many of the problems which arise in a technological society such as ours we consider various philosophies concerned with such issues as bioregionalism and appropriate technologies which are formulated to guide the future development of technology.
