Philosophy in a Nutshell - HS463

Meets the following requirements: HS HY   

This course is conceived as an introduction to the major themes and philosophers of the western tradition and is aimed on the one hand at students who want to get an overview of philosophical issues and the western tradition and on the other at advanced students who want to consolidate their background understanding of the issues underlying contemporary philosophical disputes. The issues are treated historically and range from Plato and Aristotle through Descartes,Hume, Kant, Hegel and others to Heidegger, Wittgenstein and Derrida. The philosophers of the 20th century are treated in more detail in a separate course (From Dewy to Derrida).  Evalulation will be based on class participation, and a take home mid-term and final.  In addition, a term paper will be required for more advanced students. 

Level: Introductory/intermediate.  Class limit 20. No Lab Fee.  *HS*  *HY*
