This course will explore the effervescence and upheaval of the nineteenth century. This was a century of major social and economic transformation as well as a time of impressive intellectual and philosophical innovation. We will explore the period from approximately the French Revolution to World War I to examine how western thinkers understood and articulated their ideas about the human condition. In an era of incredible creativity numerous major intellectual trends emerged from the class and social conflicts of the period. We will touch on the radical movements of the century and a range of other major intellectual and artistic movements like Romanticism, Idealism, Materialism, Darwinism and Positivism. This course will focus largely on Western European and North American intellectual history rooted in the deeper social and cultural contexts in which that history is embedded. We will cover works Mill, Kant, Darwin, Kierkegaard, Nietzcsche, Hegel, and Marx.
