Keep left after crossing the bridge onto Mount Desert Island. The drive from Boston usually takes five to six hours. College of the Atlantic is on the ocean side of Rte. 3, about 19 miles from the Ellsworth shopping district, eight miles from the head of Mount Desert Island and one-quarter mile beyond the Nova Scotia Ferry Terminal. Turn left at the COA entrance and park in the provided areas. The admission office is located in Kaelber Hall, the one with the arch overlooking the water as you come onto campus.
Alternate Driving Routes: For those folks wishing to take a more scenic route, you can exit I-95 in Augusta (third Augusta exit) following the signs for Route 3 east to Belfast. In Belfast you join Route 1 and travel east to Ellsworth on Route 1 and 3 and right on in to Bar Harbor. For the more adventuresome who wish to see the Maine coastal communities, exiting the turnpike in Kittery and heading all the way to Ellsworth on one Route 1 can be fun. Take Coastal Route 1 if you are in the mood to sightsee but are not in a hurry to get here!
