Ecological Policy and Planning Facilities and Resources

Students and faculty involved in Ecological Planning and Policy share the resources of the Center for Applied Human Ecology (CAHE). As one of COA's primary interdisciplinary research and outreach centers, CAHE's mission is to provide collaborative learning opportunities through working partnerships with local leaders and organizations on actual problems of policy and planning.

davis centerLocated in the Kathryn Davis Center for International and Regional Studies, CAHE hosts a resource library of software, computer resource inventories, and materials on environmental, social and economic issues in Maine. The Center also provides space for meetings, classes, conferences, and special projects. Program faculty, staff and students meet weekly to plan curricula, manage projects and grants, and develop program activities.

Ecological Policy and Planning also boasts a state-of-the-art Geographic Information Systems (GIS) laboratory. Students can develop skills in digital mapping and analysis that support many kinds of classes and projects involving spatial problem solving. GIS courses offer a project-based approach for hands-on learning.

The GIS Lab conducts a broad range of resource inventories and digital mapping projects used across the curriculum and with other organizations. Other resources include an extensive collection of GIS map layers for the region and surrounding communities developed by the GIS Lab. All of these resources are available to members of the college and the public for use in community planning and research.
