VISITING FACULTY IN ART HISTORY/STUDIO ART
 
      College of the Atlantic seeks a visiting faculty member in ART HISTORY/STUDIO ART.  The position is open for a ten-week term beginning March 30, 2009. Candidates should have a background in the history of art within a broad cultural and interdisciplinary context, be a practicing artist with a developing body of work, and have a track record of teaching excellence. This position entails teaching two undergraduate courses during a ten-week term. Course offerings must include one art history course and, one studio art course in areas such as: painting, drawing, photography, multimedia or sculpture. The successful candidate will offer courses that connect to other areas of our interdisciplinary curriculum. A terminal degree in an appropriate field(s) and significant teaching experience are strongly preferred.  Salary is $12,000 plus a modest housing stipend.

Environmental Education Summer Field Studies Program Leader

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Summer Field Studies for Children (SFS) is designed to offer young people in first through ninth grade the opportunity to explore and understand the ecology of Mount Desert Island and nearby areas. Through a fun, caring and interdisciplinary, hands-on and minds-on approach to learning, students gain an understanding of the role played by humans and other organisms in their environments. Participants work in small groups of 8 to 12 (with a teacher-to-student ratio of 1:6). The program is organized through The Dorr Museum of Natural History at College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor.
JOB DESCRIPTION
Under the supervision of the Summer Field Studies Coordinator and Museum Education Director, the Summer Field Studies Program Leader is responsible for:
• Designing, preparing, and teaching environmental and outdoor education activities in collaboration with assistant program leaders.
• Creating the safest possible environment for all student activities.
• Upholding SFS program standards.
• Supervising, evaluating and working closely with Assistant Program Leaders.
• Program support -which includes; inventory and maintain equipment, coordinate with other program leaders, contribute to SFS curriculum materials, evaluate programs and perform similar duties at discretion of director.
QUALIFICATIONS
The successful candidate will:
• possess a B.A./B.S., preferably with an emphasis in environmental education, early childhood education, life sciences, or related field.
• have extensive experience working with children.
• possess knowledge of coastal Maine's natural and cultural history.
• demonstrate enthusiasm, creativity, flexibility and leadership.
• have current first aid, CPR and water safety certifications or willingness to acquire
• be skilled in canoeing (for grades 5-9)
• be able to drive a fifteen passenger van.
SALARY
$3,100-3,700 for season
PROGRAM SCHEDULE:
Staff training: June 19 - June 27
Program sessions: June 30 - August 14
Closure/wrap-up: August 15- August 16
Most sessions meet for nine days (Monday through Friday of the first week and Monday through Thursday of the second week) from 9-3. The second Friday is a work day for meeting, planning and staff development. Planning and staff meetings are also scheduled before and after the participants' day.
HOUSING
Off season rate rental is available in a 6 bedroom home in Town Hill.
Or, staff may seek their own accommodations, campsite etc; we are happy to provide assistance in this.
