Friday, Sept. 14, 1973 - I looked down from my bicycle and carefully turned off the paved Route 3, Eden Street, surface to the packed gray gravel and sand driveway. I adjusted my stance, took a deep breath and entered the COA campus. Passing through the stone posts, their signs both wooden and unpainted with hand-carved lettering. The left one read in script "College of the Atlantic" and the one to the right, "Maine Coast Heritage Trust." I could see Bob Baker, my Branford, CT High School friend, ahead of me on his bicycle. The camping gear that he was carrying on his bike was the same that I had lashed to my bike frame: canvas bags containing my mess kit, USGS topographic maps of our route, tent, sleeping bag and clothing. Eddie Monat owns, runs and dives for Diver Ed's Dive-In Theater. Join Eddie and his crew on a tour of Frenchman's Bay both on top and beneath the surface of the Atlantic Ocean. During this two-hour cruise, you will watch an LCD projection of the bottom of the bay while Eddie gives you a underwater tour and gathers sea creatures to bring back to the boat deck to place into the onboard touch tank for some hands-on learning. It is a trip that is fun and educational for the entire family! Click here to read more...

What a better way to celebrate Earth Day (a.k.a COA's Christmas) than by getting Alumni together! This year, Earth Day is all about the 3 (or lets try 6) R's! Reduce, Reuse, Recycle - Re-connect, Re-unite, Re-energize! Sound hokey? Perhaps. Sound Fun? ABSOLUTELY! Not only will Alumni be invited and encouraged to participate in the COA Earth Day celebration - which was stellar last year, by the way - Alumni will be celebrated in their own right through an Alumni art and photography exhibit, an Alumni film and video festival, an Alumni "Battle of the Bands" (suggestions for better names encouraged, please email them to: Milja - mbrecher-demuro@coa.edu), and Alumni workshops! The weekend will be kicked off on Friday, April 20th with a traditional COA Alumni potluck and bonfire. Saturday will be chalk-filled with Earth Day festivities, the alumni art and photography exhibit, the film and photography festival and alumni workshops. At night we will rock-out with the "Battle of the Alumni Bands" (I know, I know...send in better names now, please!). On Sunday morning, COA will host an Alumni brunch. Please come, one and all! Just think...spring on MDI...flowers in bloom, hotels are cheap, you practically have Acadia National Park all to yourself, students and faculty are here for you to connect with... BEAUTIFUL! If you are interested in participating as an artist, photographer, musician or filmmaker, please contact me: mbrecher-demuro@coa.edu or (207) 288-2944 x268.
The COA 2006 Annual Fund drive has begun and we need your support! And it won't take much, unless you have much to give! For those of you who have never given before, please make a contribution this year; for those who have given in the past, thank you so very much and please give again this year and as generously as you can. Seriously, your contribution can be as little as $1 to as big as a trillion dollars. It all makes a difference! For those of you hemming and hawing about how you could possibly give when you are still paying student loans; just think of the fact that your gift of as little as $5 will help bring up the total number of alumni giving, which in turn is incredibly important to those larger potential donors out there. If you had the ability to give to such an incredible school, wouldn't it be enticing and validating that 100% of alumni give to their alma mater?! So, that is what you are contributing to! For those of you who have the ability to give more, and want to give to COA to help pay lighting and heating bills, help pay staff, and help with scholarships and financial aid, etc... so that future generations of students of all economic backgrounds can enjoy a COA education, the annual fund is the perfect investment! This school nurtures the leaders and inspiration catalysts of the world! Please help us continue this legacy. You can pay by check, cash or credit card. You can send your gift right away, or make a pledge that you pay later in increments of your choice. For more information or to make a gift, please click here. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!
We have received a very generous matching grant opportunity that will help us achieve our Alumni giving goal for not only this year but for the next three years!
If you have the ability to pledge at the Champlain Society level ($1500 +), your gift may be doubled by this generous alumni donation.
Please consider this extraordinary opportunity when planning your annual contribution. For more information, please contact Milja at:mbrecher-demuro@coa.edu or call: (207)288-2944 x268.
Have you moved? Changed your email address or your phone number? Please send us your updated contact information! This info. will help not only us keep in contact with you (i.e. sending you the awesome COA Magazine, Alumni E-Newsletter, COA event invitations, regional alumni events, etc...) but it will help us help your long lost COA friends find you! If you are a grad, you can check and see if we have your most current contact info. by clicking here. If you are a non-grad, contact me. I will be more than happy to help you out! Milja: mbrecher-demuro@coa.edu or (207) 288-2944 x268. Please also email me with a life update. We love to know what you are up to! It helps with networking, mentoring, and keeps us in the know regarding your interests, etc...so that we can plan the perfect alumni event. If you want your life update in the next edition of the COA Magazine in the "Class Notes" section, please let me know...and a photo is always happily received - email or hard copy (if you e-mail your image, please send it at a high definition, at least 300dpi.) Thank you!
