An Overview: The goal of this project was to create a field guide of vegetation communities on Mount Desert Island (MDI), Maine. Rather than having a section on trees, followed by a section on wildflowers, and then by a section on grasses which is typical of most field guides, this guide is based on plant communities. This field guide is geared towards the novice naturalist or interested tourist, so it was important that the map be clear, easy to read, comprehend, and lends itself naturally to the layout of the guide. The data used in this project was received from Acadia National Park botanists and from the College of the Atlantic GIS database.
Map Summary: This map depicts seven major vegetation communities along popular trails in Acadia National Park. The map includes 7 insets, which cover all of the major trail networks of Acadia and show in more detail the vegetation communities that these trails intersect.
