"At COA there's almost an expectation that we will find connections between ideas."

Thorndike Library News

Fall Term 2008

The Thorndike Library has been working this fall on developing a strategic plan for the future of the library, especially for the next 5-7 years.  Library strategic planning was the topic of the All-College Meeting week 8 (November 5).  On Wednesday, November 12, Jane Hultberg and Trisha Cantwell Keene attended the faculty meeting.  The library staff is working to collect information from work-study staff and others about how they visualize the library in the future.  If you have any ideas you wish to contribute, please contact us.

Outside the library in the glass cases is a unique display of handmade items.  Throughout this fall, Amy Reisman, Take-A-Break Dining Room Manager, led a community Thursday night crafting group.  The crafts they made are a must-see.

A new exhibit in the library reading room features the work of Colin Capers' and Dru Colbert's Human Ecology Core Couse classes this fall.  Come and see the students' beautiful artwork and read their wonderful poetry.

The library lobby is home to an ever-changing display of new titles acquired by the library. All of the new acquisitions may be checked out. You will also find a new addition to the library lounge at the head of the stairs in a Thorndike Library Staff and Wordstudy Student map. A great way to become familiar with library staff, this world map pinpoints home towns, states and countries from as close as Bar Harbor to as far away as the Maldives.

Food attracts insects that can be harmful to books - and can be annoying to humans. We appreciate your efforts in satisfying your hunger outside the library. Recognizing that some people enjoy a snack while they study, we offer on a trial basis limited food consumption in the library. If you need a snack, please limit your consumption to dry food that is quiet to eat and comes in small packages.
For drinks, we encourage you to use covered containers such as a travel mug or bottles with caps.
Please clean up after yourself. If you have a spill, please contact a staff member so that the situation can be cleared up as soon as possible. We will be evaluating our trial at the end of Fall term.

Laptops
The library has six laptops available for in-library use. You may check these out at the circulation desk. Speak to a library staff member if you have questions about their use.

Off-Campus Access Password Change
Contact Trisha Cantwell Keene at 288-2944 x211 or tcantwell@coa.edu for the newest password.
The Off-Campus Access to Databases webpage (www.coa.edu/html/libraryproxy.htm) is the best place to find out about off-campus access to Thorndike Library's research tools. Here, students faculty and staff will find a user-friendly jump-off point to investigate the resources available to the COA community.

Did you know there are subject guides on the library website? Just click on "Subject Guides" under "Research Help" on the library's homepage. Or use this link - Subject Guides. Currently we have guides in Art, Education, Chemistry, Business and Maine Resources, and more focus areas are in the making! The guides have suggestions from books to blogs about each subject.
