Gates Community Center
Let the dancing begin! College of the Atlantic's fourth Saturday contra dance resumes on Saturday, Sept
. 27 for the 2008-2009 school year. The dance features The Big Moose Contra Band with Chrissy Fowler as caller. Come to the college's Gates Community Center at 7:30 for lessons. Dancing starts at 8 p.m.
Fowler has been calling dances since 2000, and relishes introducing people to the joys of the contra-she called to hundreds of dancers recently at the American Folk Festival in Bangor. As a member of the Maine Arts Commission artist registry, Fowler teaches New England contra, circle and square dances to people of all ages. She has even written a sermon on dance as spiritual practice, which she can elaborate on at length, but she prefers to see people dancing.
The Big Moose Contra Band is an active dance band made up of musicians on Mount Desert Island and the surrounding area. It currently includes Ruth Grierson and Emma Walsh on fiddle, Jim Vekasi on mandolin, David Quimby on stand-up bass, David Towle on accordion, Keith Davis on guitar, Bob McCormick on bohdran and Charlie Richardson on mandolin. COA fiddlers and other musicians frequently join in at the COA dance.
Admission is $6. Children dance for free. For more information on the Fourth Saturday Contra Dance on Saturday, Sept. 27 at COA's Gates Center, call the college at 288-5015.
