"Being at COA is not about being a student to be filled with knowledge by a professor. It's about my seeking knowledge."

Toughcats at COA
North Haven group offers music, rhythms, action, theater
Gates Community Center

ToughcatsOn Friday, Nov 7 at 8 p.m. College of the Atlantic presents the Toughcats, a group that has catapulted from North Haven, Maine to a spot on National Public Radio's All Songs Considered.

The trio-Jake Greenlaw on suitcase, percussion and vocals; Colin Gulley on banjo, mandolin and vocals; and Joe Nelson on guitar and lead vocal-originally formed to raise money for a local scholarship fund. Using vocal harmonies, NPR reported, they blend "uke, banjo, mandolin, suitcase and percussion ... folk, rock, ragtime and bluegrass into their music." They've also been known to mix acting, juggling and movies into their live performances.

The members still live on the island and spend time working as lobstermen, carpenters, Emergency Medical Technicians and other jobs. Their first album, Pinata, is praised for the unusual quality of its recordings-which occurred within North Haven's Waterman Community Center.

These are musicians who know Maine, community and the ocean, as is clear from Out on the Ocean: "Went out on the ocean today/Can't leave town without her okay." Despite their local connections, many of Toughcats' rhythms reflect a global awareness, as indicated by the album title, Pinata.

Tickets for the Toughcats concert, held Friday, Nov. 7 in Gates Center are $10 per person. For more information, call 288-5015 ext. 335.
