College of the Atlantic hosts the Big Moose Contra Band with Chrissy Fowler as caller on Saturday, Nov. 22. Lessons begin at 7:30; dancing starts at 8 p.m. The dance will be held at COA's Gates Community Center.

The Big Moose Contra Band is a gathering of musicians from Mount Desert Island and the surrounding area. It currently includes Ruth Grierson and Emma Walsh on fiddle, Jim Vekasi on mandolin, David Quinby on stand-up bass, David Towle on accordion, Keith Davis on guitar, Bob McCormick on bohdran and Charlie Richardson on mandolin. COA fiddlers and other musicians frequently join in.

Fowler, of Belfast, is a much sought-after caller who delights in introducing people to the joys of the dance. As a member of the Maine Arts Commission artist registry, Fowler teaches New England contra, circle and square dances to people of all ages. She has even written a sermon on the spirituality of dance-but she prefers to see people dancing.

Admission is $6. Children dance for free. Costumes are certainly cherished for this event. For more information on the Fourth Saturday Contra Dance on Saturday, Nov. 22 at COA's Gates Center, call the college at 288-5015.
