Saturday, February 23, 2008 - George B. Dorr Museum of Natural History
Anxious for spring? Wish you could go out right now and find wildflowers? Join College of the Atlantic senior Maxwell van Houten in a workshop geared to recognizing flowers in their winter glory.
The Winter Weeds Workshop, on Saturday, Feb. 23 from 1 to 3 p.m., will begin at the George B. Dorr Museum of Natural History. Using the well illustrated and helpfully organized "Winter Weed Finder," a pocket-sized book by Dorcas Miller, the group will discover how possible-and fun-it is to find wildflowers in winter.
We'll learn to identify dried flower stalks and investigate their very interesting seed pods. Did you know, for instance, that the now ubiquitous velcro was invented by a man who studied cocklebur seeds? Some flowers disperse their seeds letting the wind shake them out like a salt-shaker, others parachute them on the wind and some seed pods even explode! Learn to appreciate the adaptations and beauty of weeds in winter, and leave with a winter bouquet made even more beautiful by your newfound understanding of seed dispersal.
Admission is $5 for adults; $2 for children and museum members. Children must be accompanied by an adult. For more information, call the Dorr Museum at 288-5395 or 288-5015 ext. 238.
