The Imaginative Classroom: Creating Depth with the Arts

SYLLABUS

This course is truly about inspiring students through the arts. It's about creating imaginative and creative learners, deeper thinkers, and the innovators of tomorrow by integrating the arts into regular content curriculum. Come ready to play, imagine, explore and be inspired.

 

Course Goals:
1.   To explore the many opportunities students can have to "experience" art through performance,observation and creation of visual art, and interaction with pieces that directly integrate with your curriculum
2.   Learn how to create lessons that inspire creativity, natural curiosity and higher level thinking
3.   Learn how to integrate art, critical-thinking, and student-driven inquiry into regular content curriculum
4.   Enjoy an evening performance, visit a local artist, and explore the vast resources of the Farnsworth Museum on field trips
5.   Create a portfolio of ideas to use in your specific units, as well as collect those of your colleagues

 

Field Trips:
We will enjoy the experience and wisdom of a gifted, local artist. We will truly “experience” art as we use the resources of the wonderful Farnsworth Museum in Rockland, Maine to learn how to foster deeper thinking and hopefully gain inspiration for ways to integrate works into your own curriculum. We'll take in an evening performance and find how performance invests and excites students.

Monday
*Course introduction and philosophy of the benefits of integrating the arts with regular content curriculum
*Participant experiences making math-integrated, visual art pieces; show ideas for unit integrations in math; brainstorm other math integration ideas
*Lunch break
*Participant experiences making reading-integrated, visual art pieces with questioning and reflecting;  show possible ideas for unit integrations in reading; brainstorm reading integration ideas
*Reflections and discussion

 

Tuesday
*Participant experiences creating visual arts and practice in/explanation of lesson design
*Lunch at the field trip location
**Visit with an artist and writer
*Reflections and discussion

 

Wednesday
*Participate in performance and visual art experiences that could be used to integrate social studies and science
*Options for artistic and cultural opportunities in schools and in our communities
*Group work in lesson design
*Reflections and discussion
**Evening performance

 

Thursday
*Visit to the Farnsworth Museum
*More participant experiences with art making activities to potentially use in own classroom, ideas for how to individualize for age/grade/content standards
*Group work to explore curricular possibilities
*Reflections and discussion
**Evening Performance

 

Friday
*Participants and instructor share other ideas of imaginative learning that can be integrated with curriculum
*Compile personal portfolios of activities, ideas, unit connections, questioning and reflecting possibilities, etc. to take home
*Final reflections and discussion
*Although specific integrations will be focused on with certain activities, all are easily modified to work in any content area and can be adapted to fit student interest, content area requirements, and developmental appropriateness.

 

**Sessions, activities, and field trips may vary based on weather and additional opportunities.
