Popular musician, COA alumna, returns to Gates
Friday, April 13, 2013 - Gates Community Center
After nearly two years, Cora Rose is returning to Mt. Desert Island for a one-night appearance on Friday, April 13 in College of the Atlantic's Gates Community Center. Cora Rose graduated from COA in 2010. During her four years at the college, she frequently performed on the island, drawing large crowds and rave reviews.
"It's really great to finally be coming back," says the artist. "MDI was such an important place for the growth of my music. And I'm just so excited to see everyone!"
After her 2009 farewell concert, Corey Pickett of the Bar Harbor Times spoke of her skills on acoustic guitar, mandolin and piano, saying "Cora Rose had the crowd in awe with her angelic, yet powerful vocals." He continued, "With a smile a mile wide and an infectious positive attitude, the core theme of Cora Rose's music is love - a love of friends, family, relationships, nature and a love of life in general."
A Wisconsin native, Cora Rose began writing and performing at a young age, developing skills as a singer and songwriter. She recorded her first album as a sophomore in high school and soon followed a path from rural Wisconsin to Nashville, TN. She came to COA in 2006, seeking, she says, to open her mind and music to a deeper understanding of the world.
Following her 2009 concert, Cora Rose immersed herself in international development studies in West Africa and Mexico. The musical influences she found in these travels have broadened her writing and her style. She now lives in New York City, where she has become involved in the vibrant songwriting community of Manhattan's Lower East Side. When not in New York, Cora Rose returns to her Midwest roots to perform and conduct songwriting workshops for children.
Cora Rose is currently working on a third album, and will be performing songs from this upcoming volume, as well as from her 2009 release, Turn The World.
The Cora Rose concert is on Friday, April 13 at 8 p.m. in COA's Gates Community Center at 105 Eden St. In Bar Harbor. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children. Tickets are only available at the door. For more information, call the college at 288-5015.
