Spring Event: Admitted Student Reception

College of the Atlantic invites you and your parents to attend our Admitted Student Reception on April 14th and 15th, 2013. While here, you will have the opportunity to participate in outdoor activities, attend classes and talk with faculty, staff, and students. Also, this is a great chance to meet your future classmates for next year’s entering class. As part of the event, you'll choose one of the following activities:

Beech Hill Farm- Spend a few hours getting your hands dirty and help our farmers get the 84-acre organic farm ready for planting. Chores might include doing maintenance work on the perennial garden, making potting soil, or repairing the greenhouses.

Canoe Northeast Creek- Embark on an enjoyable voyage up Northeast Creek with current students and staff. COA will provide the canoes, paddles, and life jackets; you bring shoes for walking in the bog. Beginner and experienced paddlers are welcome. We will teach you the basics of canoeing if you are a beginner, and encourage you to walk on the floating berry bog.

Sand Beach/Great Head Hike- Play frisbee on the beach or take a quick hike up the Great Head trail to get a better view of the island.

Compass Harbor Adventure- Join COA students on a trek along the Compass Harbor trail. This relatively flat walk has beautiful views of Bar Harbor's breakwater as well as a secluded rocky cove. We may also wander along the Shore Path and through downtown Bar Harbor before heading back to campus.

Meals will be served in the college’s Blair Dining Hall and students will spend Sunday night in the residence halls. Please be sure to bring a sleeping bag and pillow. You will need to arrange your own transportation to and from the college. However, with advance notice we can pick you up at the Bar Harbor Airport, (which is serviced by Colgan Air), Bangor International Airport, or one of the Bangor bus stations– Concord Trailways or Greyhound. If you are planning to drive, directions can be found on the visit page.

Presidential Scholars' Fall Fly-In Program

Interested in attending 2012's Fall Fly-In? Invitations will go out in Summer 2012, so please make sure you're on our mailing list.

For High School Seniors and Transfer Students

Each year COA selects a handful of students to each receive a Presidential Scholarship. This honor carries with it a merit-based scholarship that recognizes your academic achievement and contributions you've made to your community. If you have a passion for learning and a strong desire to create change, you could be an ideal student for COA and a candidate for the Presidential Scholarship. The first step in being considered for this scholarship is attending our Fall Fly-In event. If you are interested in attending, you must apply to participate.

We invite you to apply to become part of our Presidential Scholars' Fall Fly-In Program, a four-day visit to the college where you will see for yourself how a COA education works. If selected for this program, we will cover the cost of your trip to the college and provide meals and housing while you are on campus.

If you are interested in being considered for this event and for the scholarship, please submit the following application materials to the Office of Admission by July 20, 2012:

• an up-to-date copy of your transcripts
• an application essay addressing the following:

Robert Shetterly is a Maine-based artist and the creator of a collection of paintings entitled Americans Who Tell the Truth. Shetterly’s collection includes portraits of more than 150 Americans who carry with them the “courage, honesty, tolerance, generosity, wisdom and compassion that have made our country strong.” These citizens believe(d) strongly in their ability to change the world and lived lives that demonstrated this ability in action.

You are invited to visit Americans Who Tell the Truth, choose a portrait that resonates with you, and write an essay in response.

• We will contact you in early August to let you know if you’ve been selected to participate in the Presidential Scholars’ Fall Fly-In Program. We will then work with you to make travel arrangements for your visit to campus, September 27 -30, 2012.
• If you are not chosen to participate in the Presidential Scholars’ Fall Fly-In Program, please understand that this is a highly selective program. It does not mean that we do not think you are a good candidate for COA. Many students who have applied for the Fall Fly-In are not selected but still apply to COA, are admitted, and become stellar members of the community. Those who are admitted will still be eligible to receive need-based financial aid.
• It is possible that students who aren’t participants in Presidential Scholars’ Fall Fly-In Program demonstrate such strength in their applications for admission that they are chosen to be Presidential Scholars even without attending the Fall Fly-In Program.
• On October 8 and 9, 2012, COA will be offering an open house, known as Fall Tour, for all prospective students. Should you not be selected to attend the Presidential Scholars’ Fall Fly-In Program, we encourage you to attend Fall Tour.

Parents are welcome at this event.

College of the Atlantic invites you and your parents to an informative and enjoyable visit to campus. You will have the opportunity to tour the campus, to sit in on classes, spend the night on campus, and speak with faculty and students about the college. This program is designed to offer prospective students a comprehensive view of COA's unique learning environment. Personal interviews can be arranged with an admission counselor during your visit.

Your parents are encouraged to come and enjoy the COA Fall Tour, although we cannot provide their lodging. Alisting of motels and hotels is available here.

TRANSFER SCHOLARS WINTER FLY-IN

Complete your application and grab a sweater, because from February 21-24, 2013 we're hosting the Transfer Scholar Winter Fly-In, a special weekend for students considering a transfer to College of the Atlantic. Come join us on our Mt. Desert Island campus for a glimpse of winter life at COA.

As a student considering a college transfer, you have hopefully had the opportunity to discover what's really working, and what's really missing from your college education. Whether you've decided that you're looking for a different challenge in your undergraduate experience, or you're about to finish your Associate's Degree at an accredited community college, this weekend is designed to encourage you to challenge the assumptions of what an undergraduate education is meant to be. Come and experience what it means to carve your own academic path as you sit in on classes, interact with our educational community, explore the island, and live the life of a COA student for a few days. Perhaps, you'll be among COA's incoming class of Presidential and Community College Scholarshipwinners!

You are invited to apply for an expenses-paid, four day visit to COA. Come and see for yourself how an education in Human Ecology challenges you to create change in yourself and in the world. We'll cover your transportation, food, and housing costs for the trip.
