Allen, Judith
Associate Director of Allied Whale

Judy Allen
 
Judy Allen has directed humpback photo-identification studies at Allied Whale for over 20 years.  This includes the North Atlantic Humpback Whale Catalogue, the Years of the North Atlantic Humpback (YoNAH) Project, and the Antarctic Humpback Catalogue. Through these projects, she has had the opportunity to collaborate with scientists in many countries, and to participate in field work in the Gulf of Maine, Bermuda and the Antarctic.  In addition, Judy is part of the team managing the Bar Harbor Whale Museum.
 
 
 
DenDanto, Dan
Research Associate and Director of the Fin Whale Catalogue

Dan DenDantoDan DenDanto has participated in Allied Whale research projects since 1989.  He currently directs The North Atlantic Fin Whale Catalogue while pursuing studies in fin whale population genetics and demographic ecology.  Dan's research focuses on life history data, including photographic-identification, genetic, and sightings information to investigate interactions between individual fin whales in the Northern Gulf of Maine.  He has functioned as the station manager at the EMC Blair Marine Research Station at Mount Desert Rock since 1998.  

Dan has been contracted to assist in filming ocean documentaries and has been affiliated with award winning productions such as the BBC's "Blue Planet" series, I-max - Living Seas and Maine Public Broadcasting programming.  Dan is currently a forensic analyst of the University of Maine Molecular Forensic Laboratory for Wildlife utilizing DNA sciences to investigate criminal wildlife cases from across the North East United States.  Since 1993 Dan has worked professionally on the re-articulation of large marine mammal skeletons for museums and educational institutions.

Seton, Rosemary
Research Associate and Marine Mammal Stranding Coordinator

Rosie on boatRosemary joined the Allied Whale lab at COA full time in 1998. She is the marine mammal stranding coordinator for the northeast region of Maine and is a Research Associate with the North Atlantic Humpback Whale Catalogue. Rosemary holds a B.A. (Physiological and Neuropsychology) from McGill University in Montreal, her hometown. She also completed graduate course work at  Memorial University of Newfoundland. A student of Dr. Jon Lien's,  she investigated the ice entrapments of blue whales and other cetaceans off the coast of Newfoundland. As well, she was also involved (like all Jon's students were!)  in the Whale Disentanglement Program. She has worked with large baleen whales, especially humpback whales, for over 19 years in Canada,  the United States, and on Silver Bank in the Dominican Republic. She was an invited speaker on humpback and fin whale photo-comparison at the Miol Mor International Whale Conference in Ireland in 2005.
 
 
Stephenson, Toby
Research Associate
Toby's primary position is the Curator of the Bar Harbor Whale Museum. In 2003, he and Judy Allen re-opened the museum as a joint operation for Allied Whale and the Bar Harbor Whale Watch Company. Toby develops new exhibits, coordinates program activities, and oversees the museum collections as well as general building operations. He is also a licensed captain and assists in operating Allied Whale's stranding/research vessel, the R/V Borealis during the summer field season. Further, he operates whale watching vessels for the Bar Harbor Whale Watch Company. Toby has been involved with Allied Whale since 1994 first as a COA student, post graduate as a volunteer and now as a Research Associate.
 
 
 
 
 
 
Todd, Sean Ph.D.
Director of Allied Whale and Professor of Marine Mammals

Dr. Sean Todd is the Director of Allied Whale and a professor at COA. Sean teaches biology, sensory ecology, oceanography, sound, maritime studies, quantitative science, statistics and marine mammal science classes. He is also an adjunct faculty member at the University of Maine in Orono. He earned his B.Sc. in Marine Biology and Oceanography at the University College of North Wales (Bangor, UK), and his M.Sc. (1991) and Ph.D. (1997) in Biopsychology, at Memorial University of Newfoundland (St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada). Click here for a complete list of publications and PDFs. He specializes in bioacoustics and foraging ecology of balaenopterid whales. Sean is on the Scientific Board of Advisors for the American Cetacean Society and the Marine Environmental Research Institute. He also directs the Marine Mammal Stranding Response Program at COA.
 
 
Viechnicki, Mindy
Assistant Stranding Coordinator

Mindy ViechnickiMindy Viechnicki joined the team of researchers at Allied Whale in 2003. Her experience includes photo-id of various cetaceans in southwestern Canada, Bahamas, Gulf of Mexico, and Florida. Her work also includes population studies through aerial and shipboard surveys and behavioral analyses with various delphinids. She is now the assistant manager of the North Atlantic Humpback Whale Catalogue at Allied Whale. Mindy graduated from Hampshire College in 1993 with a B.A. in Marine Science and Ecology and a minor in Child Development.
