We're glad that you are focusing on schools that promote sustainability. We're glad that you are a student who knows that there is work to be done to protect and nurture the environment and to build communities. And we're glad that you want to take this awareness one step further and actually create positive changes! COA is THE college to give you the education you need to translate your ideals into reality. Because of our interdisciplinary, self-designed program which promotes learning by doing, you will gain a relevant, thoughtful, and inspiring education which will send you into the world able to transform it.
We invite you to get to know COA by exploring our website: look at our list of classes, check out some student projects, take an on-line campus tour. These are great ways to begin to understand how this college is different from every other school out there. Then, when you're ready to experience what a dynamic education feels like, set up a visit to COA. Come to Bar Harbor, Maine and take a real campus tour led by a student; sit in on classes of your choice; eat some of the award winning food in our dining hall and spend the night in one of our residence halls; visit our next door neighbor, Acadia National Park, for a hike or kayak trip, bike ride or cross country skiing. Chances are you will be swept up in the spirit of learning and community that guide this school. And you will feel both an excitement and a relief that learning can be the way you always hoped it would be: life changing AND world changing. In the meantime, we'd be happy to send you more information about the college.
As an EcoLeague student wishing to transfer credit back to your home college, you should know that COA has a unique method of applying credit to completed course work. Our academic calendar is made up of three ten-week terms, Fall (September - November), Winter (January - March), and Spring (April - June). A normal full-time course load is three credit units per term. The typical COA course carries one credit. Each COA credit is equal to 3.3 semester hour credits. As an example, if you were to complete three credits per term at College of the Atlantic, you would be able to transfer the equivalent of 9.9 semester hour credits (per term) back to your college. Course work evaluation at COA may be by letter-grade or by credit-no credit; there is also an accompanying written evaluation by the instructor and you, the student.
If you currently receive financial aid, we encourage you to talk to your collegeís financial aid office. Your aid will cover your study at other EcoLeague institutions still but special conditions do exist. Please research them by meeting with a member of the financial aid office at your current school.
