GIS Lab

Geographic Information Systems

The GIS Laboratory is the technical hub for mapping and analysis at the college. Established in 1987, the lab provides project support to students, faculty and staff. Because the lab does not reside within a specific department of the college, it serves the entire academic program-a unique aspect of COA's lab compared to other colleges and universities. COA's GIS program is founded on partnership-building, training, research and service, allowing students to engage in a broad range of projects while providing valuable assistance to local communities and social and conservation organizations. Students often work cooperatively with federal, state and local officials, as well as with nonprofit organizations. The services offered by COA students are real and valued. This approach to training and education prepares students for jobs, internships and graduate work where holistic, placed-based approaches to problem-solving are required. The GIS Laboratory provides community access to a full range of industry-standard software from Environmental Systems Research Institute, ensuring that students are experienced in the most common and current GIS technologies.
