An Overview: The two maps created were focused on violence and property crime in Hartford, CT. There are six individual maps on each large map which show the following statistics for each neighborhood: white population, black population, hispanic population, poverty, population density, and vacant housing. It should be noted that because crime is measured against population, downtown's data is likely skewed. It has a very large working population which could not be incorporated into the data.
Map Summary 1: This map shows violent crime in Hartford neighborhoods. Each map has a photo of one of the neighborhoods which has a high degree of what is being measured. Each neighborhood was created from scratch using census blocks. This was accomplished by georeferencing a jpeg of Hartford neighborhoods and comparing it to the census map. The census blocks correlated well. The crime data was calculated by the police department, but the census data for each neighborhood was calculated based on the census block data.
