The Group Study is a student-initiated, one-term project which provides an opportunity for the collective pursuit of specific academic problems, topics, or issues which are not offered in the regular curriculum. In brief, a group study is a student-designed, and collectively run class. A group study is intended to aid students in learning how to work together cooperatively and effectively in a team. Key factors in the success of a group study are planning, goal-setting, and evaluation.
The content of group studies ranges widely. Some groups work on "hands-on" projects that have tangible products. For example, a recent group study built a timber-frame structure that will be used as a teaching space at Beech Hill Farm. Another recent group study worked to renovate and revitalize one of the historic gardens on campus, and another focused on the science of biodiesel. Other group studies are more seminar-like, with the objective being the sharing of information among members or to provide students with a supportive group to work with while they pursue individual skills. For example, there was a recent group study in advanced animation techniques that allowed students a setting in which to pursue advanced animation projects.
