What are Reserves?
Reserves are materials set aside in a designated area of the library for shared use, usually for a limited time. Faculty place items on reserve to provide class members equal access to required or supplemental materials for a short loan period. Items may also be placed on reserve for COA committees or other COA group use.
Where do I access the library reserves?
All reserves are located on shelving in the Library lobby across from the Circulation Desk.
Class Reserves • These are organized first by faculty name and then by class code on the shelves. Each class is given a code name. If John Anderson is teaching Ecology, coded ECOL, you will find his reserve books for that class under Anderson/ECOL. Posted on the wall by the reserve shelves are lists of classes organized by faculty and class names to help you find what you need.
Committee and Other Reserves • On the shelves, after the class reserves, are reserve items for committees and other special groups.
How do I know what is on Reserve for my class?
You can find what is currently on reserve for your class by selecting course reserves by course title or faculty member. (Note: These lists may not be completely current. Stop by the library or contact library staff if you cannot find what you need.)
Do I have to check out library reserves?
YES. All items MUST BE checked out at the Circulation Desk before use, even if you are just using the item in the library. This allows us to better manage and track these high-demand materials.
How long can reserves be borrowed?
Materials on reserve are loaned for various time periods and are coded accordingly with colored straps or tape.
Red • 4 Hour loan period (Items checked out within four hours of closing must be in the book drop outside Kaelber Hall by 7:30 am the next morning)
Yellow • Overnight loan period, due back by 9 a.m. the next day
Green • 3-day loan period, due back by 9 a.m. the 4th day.
Can I renew reserve items?
Reserve items with a 4-hour check out cannot be renewed. Items with an overnight and 3-day loan period can be renewed.
What happens if my reserve items are returned late?
Thorndike Library does not levy fines. Material on class reserves is for the shared use of the entire class. It is expected that you will honor your classmate's needs and return items on time. The library maintains the right to deny you access to the reserves if you fail to be respectful of your classmates by chronically returning items late. No additional library items can be checked out until your overdues are returned.
Can I return reserve items in the Book Drop just outside the Kaelber Hall doors?
Yes. However, if we are open, we prefer that you return your reserves directly to the Circulation Desk. This way we can be sure they are back on the reserve shelves promptly.
What if I lose or damage a Reserve item?
As with all lost or damaged items borrowed from the library, you will be charged a replacement and handling fee.
Are there eReserves?
We do not have an electronic reserves system per se. Instead, faculty may provide electronic copies or digital links to items they want you to read by making them available in an electronic course folder. If this is the case, the faculty member will provide you with information for accessing the information. Only class members can access this information. |
