Carbon Net-Zero
  • As of December, 2007, COA has reduced, avoided or offset all of its greenhouse gas emissions, leading all colleges and universities in an effort to encourage all institutions to minimize contributions to climate change.
  • Since November, 2007, all of our electricity emissions have been avoided, reducing by 22% all the college's greenhouse gases.
  • On December 19, 2007, COA will offset the college's remaining emissions. COA's offsets will be measurable, third-party verifiable, additional and cannot be resold.
Conservation
  • Students, faculty and staff constantly engage in efforts to preserve and restore land in Maine and elsewhere.
  • The college offers support and office space to the Union River Watershed Coalition drawing attention to the important issues of watershed preservation.
  • COA alumni are world leaders in conservation, including helping to create the Phoenix Islands Protected Area, the world's third largest marine wildlife sanctuary.
Sustainable Campus

  • The Kathryn W. Davis Residence Village, currently under construction, uses the highest current standards in green building.
  • Historic architecture from Mount Desert Island's golden era is being preserved through careful maintenance and creative re-use.
  • Staff members are continually vigilant about eliminating toxins from paint, cleaning materials, landscaping and classrooms.
  • All wood used on campus comes from sustainably-managed forests.

Farm To Food
  • COA honors a healthy food system through its support and purchase of local, organic foods.
  • Beech Hill Farm, COA's own organic farm, offers its produce to the college, local schools and the communityThe farm also serves as an educational model to students from preschool to the college's master's program.
 
Recycling

  • COA students have been leaders in recycling efforts locally and statewide.
  • In 2005, COA held the first-known Zero-Waste Graduation.
  • Recycling bins are available on every campus floor - and continually used.
  • All waste food is composted.
  • All office paper is 100% recycled.
  • Students, faculty and staff study the issues - and take action.
