Class will meet for 2 hours/week, in addition to 4-6 hrs listening time per week
Week 1 Musicology 101 (help from John
Cooper). Discussion of modern forms and a composer's
perspective with Henry Mollicone (artist in residence)
Week 2 Monteverdi's Orfeo et Eurydice or
Purcell's Dido and Aeneas. Examination of Oratorio; Handel's
Messiah? Week 3 Mozart's Die Zauberflote, Don
Giovanni and Le Nozze de Figaro Week 4 Bizet's Carmen, Saint-Saen's
Samson et Delilah, Offenbach's Les Contes des
Hoffman Week 5 Beethoven's Fidelio; Donizetti,
Lucia d'Lammermoor, or L'Elisir d'amore; Rossini Il Barbiere
di Siviglia, La Ceneretola, or Giullaume Tell Week 6 Verdi's Rigoletto, La Traviata or
Aida Week 7 Puccini's La Boheme, Tosca, and
Turandot Week 8 Wagner; Die Walkure and
Tannhauser Week 9 Operetta; Die Fleidermaus, and
Gilbert and Sullivan's Pirates of Penzance. 20th Century
opera: Bartok's Bluebeard's Castle. Strauss's Electra or
Salome. Weill's Threepenny opera. Week 10 Bernstein's Candide and/or
Westside Story (compare to Gounod's Romeo et Juliet).
Broadway. Previn's A Street Car Named Desire. Perhaps The
Great Gatsby.
