Carly Segal

Willits, Northern California

What has been your favorite class at COA? Why?
I don’t know, they’ve all been so good...maybe Physics II. I learned something completely new every single class, and it was all really useful for understanding how our electrical systems work. It was also just a lot of fun.

Carly SegalWhat classes have you taken at COA?
Human Ecology Core Course with Bonnie Tai
Life Drawing
Renaissance and the Reformation: Europe in Transition
Physics II
Biology I
Adolescent Psychology
Biology II
Physics and Mathematics of Sustainable Energy Systems
Public Speaking

What was your favorite project at COA? Why?
Ohh, picking favorites is hard for me. Let’s see, I think one of my favorite assignments was in Adolescent Psychology. We made CDs of songs pertaining to our adolescence and we printed out the lyrics to all of the songs. Then we exchanged them anonymously within the class and psycho-analyzed the adolescence of the person whose CD we received based on their ten songs. I found it really interesting how much you actually can infer about someone based on ten songs, and also how much you assume about people based on the music they listen to. I also really loved my physics final for Physics II, it was like a puzzle, and really satisfying when things actually worked out.

What is your dream occupation?
I don’t know yet. The hypothetical occupations friends and I discuss developing are owning and running a bakery/cafe and living on a farm with a large garden where we would grow lots of veggies and flowers.

Do you work on or off campus? If yes, where?
I work on campus in the kitchens and occasionally with the compost crew.

What do you see yourself doing after COA?
Traveling and continuing to learn lots of new things.

What country or state would you like to visit? Where would you love to live?
All of them, however right now, I am thinking I would like to go to Wahington State, Colorado, Montana, and maybe down south somewhere, and then all over the rest of the world. I’m not sure where I would like to live, but I like living near the ocean so probably some sort of coastal region.

What is happiness to you?
Early, early summer mornings alone. Afternoon tea parties with friends. Doing sports outside year round. Learning new skills. Cooking and baking. Talking with good friends. Spending time with plants. Painting and drawing. And sooo much more.

What are your plans, if any, for your internship?
I have not yet had an internship. It looks like I am most likely going to be doing one this summer here on Mount Desert Island looking doing some wind power implementation with Dave Feldman and Anna Demeo. I will most likely do multiple internships while I am at COA. Hopefully, I’ll also do some sort of agriculture/botany/herbalism internship and others that are completely unrelated.

What are your ideas for your senior project? If you have already done one, what did you do?
I don’t know yet, I’m sure I’ll come up with multiple ideas that will change while I am at COA.

What is one of your favorite childhood memories?
Jumping in icy Lake Tahoe in winter, then running through the snow to the heated pool with my sister and our best friend. Then going back and doing it again (once we warmed up a little).

What is your favorite food to eat? What is your favorite thing to cook?
Vegetables. However I also enjoy food from around the world. I don’t have a favorite thing to cook. I like learning new recipes and experimenting with changing them. I also really like to bake.
