Professor Clinger will present preliminary research findings from her visit to these cultural places and natural spaces. Catherine will relate tales of geology and governance from Thingvellir – the UNESCO World Heritage site where the North American and Eurasian Plates are diverging and where 10th Century Icelanders did converge in general assembly.
She will also share imaginings from the Hardangervidda Plateau of Norway – the largest alpine peneplain in Europe as well as terrestrial Muse to Nordic painters of the 19th Century. In conclusion, Professor Clinger will offer a reflection upon two exhibitions, Gjennom Naturen (Oslo) and Unsettled Landscapes (Santa Fe) that brought together concepts shared between the visual arts and natural history.
